It’s Official – We Did It!

Adam Leyton and Chris Fletcher with certificates

On 25th and 26th November 2018, Chris and I attempted, and beat, the Guinness World Record for ‘Most Capital Cities Visited in 24 Hours By Scheduled Transport‘!

In 23 hours and 50 minutes, we visited London, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Berlin, Prague, Bratislava, Vienna and Budapest.

We had a security alert in Paris that caused us to miss a vital connection, made it from train to gate in 9 minutes at Amsterdam Schiphol airport, very nearly missed our bus connection in Bratislava and arrived at the finish in Budapest with just 10 minutes to spare.

Yesterday we were invited to a meeting in Edinburgh as Guinness World Records wanted to interview us for a feature they are planning. We had the pleasure of meeting Craig Glenday, Editor-in-Chief of Guinness World Records, who confirmed our record had been approved and presented us with our certificates.

Here’s the video of how it all happened!

9in24 FAQs

Adam Leyton and Chris Fletcher at Edinburgh Castle

On 25th-26th November, Chris and I are attempting to beat the Guinness World Record for the most capital cities visited in 24 hours using only public transport.

Where are you visiting?

We’ll be visiting the capital city of 9 countries (!) but the exact route is ‘top secret’ until we leave. We’ll update this page before we set off so you know where we’re going and when we’ll be there.

How can I follow your progress?

You can search social media for #9in24. We’ll be tweeting from @AdamLeyton and @Get_Fletch posting on Instagram from @NorthernAgency and there may be some Facebook Live video and updates from Adam Leyton.

On the day you will be able to follow us in real-time using the map below. Our position will be updated every few minutes.

Why are you doing this?

We’re doing this to break a world record (let’s face it, this world record could get a lot tricker to break after Brexit) and to raise money and awareness for Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity.

You can donate to Sands through our Justgiving page, justgiving.com/9in24

Give me some stats

We’ll use 6 trains, 5 buses, 2 flights and need to run about 3km. We’ll cover around 2,600 km (1,600 miles) in total meaning we need to average 68mph, every hour, for 24 hours.

We’ll probably drink about 6 litres of coffee (each), some beers, maybe visit 9 McDonald’s (is there a world record for that too?) and have enough portable battery power for at least 10 phone charges each.

Record-Breaking Plan to Visit 9 Capital Cities in a Day Using Just Public Transport

Europe Map

Two business partners are preparing to set out on the ultimate European sightseeing trip.

Adam Leyton, 41, from Edinburgh and Chris Fletcher, 38, from Leeds are attempting to beat the Guinness World Record for the number of capital cities visited in a day using only buses, trains and planes.

Starting in London on 25thNovember and finishing just under 24 hours later, they plan to visit the capital of 9 countries.

Mr Leyton is no stranger to mad dash trips across Europe. He previously beat the record for the number of countries visited in a day using just public transport.

“There will be no quick hops back and forth across borders this time.”, he commented.

“We need to travel inland as far as the capital itself and visit a central square, government building or major train or bus station. The connections are extremely tight, some under 5 minutes, but with Brexit around the corner, we thought it was the perfect time to see as much of Europe as we could, in a day!”

Mr Fletcher added “Whilst the UK is still in the EU, we might as well see as much as we can!”

As they make their way around the continent the pair, who are co-owners of marketing agency CEE Digital, will be raising money for Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity.

Sands offers support to anyone who has been affected by the death of a baby before, during or shortly after birth.

Eight years ago, Mr Leyton’s sister, Gemma, lost her baby daughter Tilly Rose just 5 days before she was due to be born.

“The support Sands gave my sister and her family was incredible.”, said Mr Leyton.

Hopefully we can raise some money and awareness for this wonderful charity and at the same time set a new world record!”, he added.

Most Capital Cities Visited in 24 Hours – A History of The Record Attempt

Traveller with backpack at train station

On 25th November 2018, Adam and Chris will be attempting to beat the Guinness World record for the ‘most sovereign capital cities visited in 24 hours by scheduled transport’.

Starting in London on 25th November and finishing in Budapest just under 24 hours later, they plan to visit a total of 9 capitals. Here is a short history of the trips made by previous holders of this world record.

6 Capital Cities in 24 Hours

This record was first set in 2013 by journalist Sarah Warwick and her sister, Lucy. Working at the time for easyJet Traveller magazine, Sarah’s editor set her the challenge of setting a new world record.

The pair set out from Paris on 24th September and passed through Brussels, Prague, Vienna, and Bratislava before finishing on the 25th in Budapest.

They narrowly missed out on a seventh capital, deciding not to visit the Dutch capital of Amsterdam and instead head straight for Schiphol Airport as they were short on time and at risk of missing their flight to Prague.

7 Capital Cities in 24 Hours

On 15-16 April 2014, Barnaby Davies visited seven European capital cities in 23 hours and 49 minutes.

He visited London, Paris, Brussels, Ljubljana, Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest.

8 Capital Cities in 24 Hours

The current record of 8 capital cities in 24 hours was set by John D’Elia, Alan Kohler, Stephen Yates and Scott Gee.

They visited Budapest, Vienna, Bratislava, Prague, Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris and London on 20-21 March 2015.
